A. Castellana

Rueda.

Agricola Castellana was founded in 1935 by a small but dedicated group of ambitious viticulturists. The winery has been a reference in Rueda since then and consistently wins the top prizes in their category for their white wines in Spain.

Located in la Seca, in the south of Valladolid, a high altitude, 2400 feet, plateau where the low fertility of the soil and the scarce rains combine to produce low yields but highly concentrated grapes . Winters are harsh, dry and sunny (2600 hours/year) allowing a perfect ripening of the grapes. The Continental climate, with extreme temperature differences between the day and night, is the reason for the unique balance achieved in these grapes.

The average age of the vines is 25 years. The soil is pure limestone with a clay sublayer. Exquisite attention has been given to the characteristics of the terrain. Testing drills extract samples to determine the structure of the soil up to 12 feet deep in order to ensure optimum growth conditions for the vines. Agricola Castellana has some of the most unique "gravelly" soils in Rueda.

Carefully selected Verdejo grapes are harvested during the night and quickly carried to the winery. The fermentation takes place in temperature controlled, stainless steel vats at very low temperatures ( 61F) ensuring a careful fermentation.  The brilliantly clean must ferments for 25 days.

Only native yeasts are used. Careful batonages are carried carefully to maximize contact with the lees for 3 months. Bottling takes place after a very light filtration.

The white Verdejo grape, produces unique white wines that are balanced and structured, with strong personality, and elegant aromas.
